This particular individual in South India has become a phenomenon, allowing us to document and photograph a black panther like never before. Tracking him over the past few years has been the highlight of my life. . . Melanistic leopards, also known as black panthers in Asia and Africa, are not it’s own species. Their dark colouration is due to a surplus of melanin in their body and is a condition caused by the ‘agouti’ gene, which regulates the distribution of this black pigmentation within the hair. . .
